the ascendant, 1st house, and your life’s purpose

each and every soul that has walked this earth is given purpose, whether that purpose is realized or not. that purpose is deeply entwined with the person that you are in this lifetime that it’s quite difficult to separate the two. essentially, we are our own purpose, and we can see this reflected to us astrologically through the first house of one’s natal chart.

this first house is home of the ascendant, which is the point in the sky that was on the eastern horizon at the time of birth. the ascendant rules the Self which is the truest version of ourselves that emerges when there is integration and wholeness between the ego and the soul. you can think of the ascendant as the avatar you play as in the game of life. through the ascendant and the first house, we can answer important questions like:

• who am i?

• what did i come here to do?

the manifestation of your becoming in your mother’s womb was never by accident, even if your arrival was unexpected. before entering a new lifetime, we are given our assignments for our new life and our souls agree to them before our existence even reaches the womb. by identifying your life’s purpose, you are given a more clear sense of direction on how to move more intentionally through life.

majority of the world’s population agree to come to this earth and never recover from the amnesia of not remembering why they came here. you know how you’ll walk into a room and forget what you even went in there to grab in the first place? life works exactly like that.

the first house tells us a lot about our birth story, which is why we spawn in the first house through the ascendant. for example, mars on the ascendant can signify the native being a result of a cesarean section.

without being birthed into the world, we wouldn’t have a purpose to live out. our mothers pass down bloodline karma through the birth canal as we eject from her womb space which also plays a major role in shaping our purpose. our ancestors are some of the closest spirits to us naturally who we can easily call on for assistance because of their connection through blood. living in our purpose helps us to reconcile with any karmic baggage that has kept us in separation with the Self and also heals the bloodline which the ancestors still get to benefit from, even long after their lives. imagine generations of domestic violence and then you come along and decide to go no contact with your father that beat your mother. the ancestors can rest in peace knowing that you did the work to no longer perpetuate or support this evil behavior.

since the natal chart is a fixed snapshot of the sky at the moment of your birth and does not change over time (unlike your progressed chart), it makes sense to question if that means that our purpose in life is fixed as well. does the assignment ever change? of course, because you change and you are your purpose. in one phase of life, your purpose may be expressed through your career. in another phase, it could be expressed through how you show up in the lives of close family and friends. more oftentimes than not, your fundamental purpose won’t change but will be expressed in a multitude of different ways over the course of your life, depending on the transits going through or aspecting your ascendant/first house.
